Monks on motorbikes

Everything is going really well!

Here in Swayambhu there is a ton of preparation for a huge festival celebrating the birth, attainment of enlightenment, and death of Buddha. Thousands of people are gathering here in town in celebration. Very cool!

My mind is constantly blown by the complete lack of concern for safety. Earlier I saw a very, very young baby being held by the driver of a motorcycle climbing up hill on an unpaved road. The things you see on motorcycles are pretty hilarious. The director was telling a story of seeing livestock strapped to the back of a motorcycle.

Tomorrow I'm taking a group of kids on a very long hike to visit this old, quaint monastery in the mountains.

The new constitution is scheduled to be completed this Friday. The Maoists are threatening to hold a huge bandh (strike) which will completely shutdown Kathmandu. Should be interesting. Swayambhu has 2 large military bases, so things are quite safe here and out of the reach of the Maoists.
